Governor of Bermuda welcomes swimmers in the Round the Sound Swim. October 19th 2008, Harrington Sound, Bermuda: His Excellency the Governor of Bermuda Sir Richard Gozney welcomed the largest contingent of swimmers ever to Bermuda for the 2008 Round the Sound Swim. 217 swimmers from over 25 US states, Canada, Europe, and Bermuda took part in distances ranging from 800 meters to a 10K. The 10K event took the swimmers entirely around scenic Harrington Sound. The swim originated some 18 years ago by Bermuda open water swimmer Reeve Trott who brought the idea up to his coach Duncan Newby. The dream has become a charity fundraising event and since that time more than $300,000 has been raised by the swimmers and organizers for various local charities. In recognition of Duncan’s passing this year the event was held in his honor with his name and “Our Inspiration” added to the sleeve of the event t-shirts. A special thanks to all the sponsors and participants who worked behind the scenes to make this event a success. The 2008 results, information, and sponsors from this years swim can be found by scrolling down this page. Information about next year’s 2009 event will be posted here soon –join our event mailing list to keep you informed. 2007 RTS event photos click here October 21st 2007. Over 160 swimmers from 19 different US states and several continents were welcomed to Bermuda for Élan’s 17th Annual Bermuda Round the Sound Open Water Swim. Blessed with beautiful skies the days leading up to the event the swimmers gathered for their customary group swims visiting some of Bermuda’s most beautiful beaches and reefs. Bermudian swimmer Mike Cash was swim tour guide extraordinaire. Mike often would freedive down into the depths and through the reefs to bring back a handful of pink sand to share with the visiting swimmers. In addition to these group swims Coach “fire those hips” Sue (Welker) kept everyone loose with her early morning Pilates on Grotto Beach. The afternoon and evenings were spent touring the islands many beaches, exquisite restaurants, and of course the socials at Swizzle Inn. Beautiful weather continued right through event day as the swimmers were transported to their starting locations. The 10K course took the swimmers the entire distance around Harrington Sound and was won by Liz Dillman (complete results follow). Each distance offered had it share of competition and as conversations suggested friendship building at the check in points. A special Thank You, or to put it another way “one more toast” goes out to: -all the swimmers who truly made this event a success. -the volunteers at Aqua Moon Adventures Kevin Insley, for his leadership, sponsorship, and warm smile while being the go to guy for everything related to this event. The Dolphin Swim team who’s behind the scenes administration was second to none –a first class production! They also grilled some of the best post event food adding to the celebratory awards ceremony. Reeve Trott and Duncan Newby whose adventurous sprit continues some 17 years after founding this event. Let's not forget the bottomless cooler they kept full post race! The Grotto Bay Beach Resort, our headquarters hotel, who let us swim in their Grotto's Caves, filled us with delicious food and drink and made sure all our needs were met.
